Working at the Houston cardiology center he founded, Dr. Cooley, in 1969, implanted the first totally artificial heart. His mentor and partner, the renowned surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, felt betrayed.

George R. Cooley Dies at 90; Established Professorships
George R. Cooley, an Albany securities broker who established one of the country's first professorships in peace studies at Colgate University in 1972, died Saturday at his home in Rensselaerville, N.Y. He was 90 years old. The Colgate professorship was designated as the Dag Hammarskjold Chair, in honor of the Secretary General of the United Nations from 1953 to 1961. Mr. Cooley had been briefly a student at Colgate in 1917 when he left to go into military service.
