Glauber Rocha, a film director who was a leading exponent of Brazil's ''new cinema,'' died in a Rio de Janeiro hospital yesterday from complications of a lung infection. He was 42 years old. Mr. Rocha had returned to Brazil on Friday after receiving medical treatment in Lisbon. The political portents of his films made Mr. Rocha one of the most important and controversial directors of the 1960's, and his work became very influential in Europe, where he lived for many years.
