There’s ample precedent for the festival-enabled drum battle: at the early Newport Jazz Festivals, for instance, where Buddy Rich duked it out with Philly Joe Jones and others. Here at the jazz tent Saturday afternoon, a tribute to Max Roach featured three drumsets onstage, manned by Jason Marsalis, Herlin Riley and Shannon Powell. But the exchange had more to do with camaraderie than competition.
